It's August already, one of the warmest months of the year in Europe and North America.

In the southern hemisphere, it's the opposite.

We recently completed a large stills shoot for Europe in the south of Chile, specifically the area of Pucon.

The locations requested were snow covered forests, and here are a few recent references from our production.

Converse just launched their international campaign,
where the request was for directors to trace the motivations and a day in the life of up and coming young artists.

shot Chilean artist Felipe Santander working with leather and sewing it into his version of a painting.

His "Mother" work is stunning, created with an industrial sewing machine, years of trial and effort to learn his technique, and a massive dose of talent.

New Renault Megane Cabriolet project made in Chile

Renault Cabriolet, the brand new model was just launched last month at the Geneva Auto Show.
Where was the campaign filmed?
In Chile.

La Casa Films took the responsibility of servicing the production, finding the locations, getting the permits, equipment and crew together.

A low budget was a challenge, but everything actually came in right below budget.
The slight excess was returned to our client.

Renault Stills Shoot in Chile, highway and coast locations

Renault France was our client for this 8 day stills shoot.

We presented various beach and urban locations, as well as closable highways along the coast.

In the end, photographer Patrick Curtet chose to travel to the southern town of Constitucion to shoot the coastal highways.
Urban locations were selected in Santiago.

Spring is nicer than fall in our book, the leaves are growing, not falling off.

There is plenty of spring skiing (but here it's powder because of the higher elevation) to last at least into October.

Hi everyone, we're at the end of winter right now in Chile.
The Andes mountains above Santiago, and in all regions of central and southern Chile still have snow, skiing season is still open and will be for a while yet.

At the same time, it's already sunny again, and we've been having balmy weather, approaching 29 degrees this week.
The cherry blossoms are in bloom, grass is already green, and in general, the look of spring is here.
Deciduous trees are growing new leaves, so they won't yet have the full plump look.

Crops are starting to grow, winter wheat is already green, as is Barley, hops, etc.

Chasing numbers down the city streets/ production service ING USA

The request this time?
the ING campaign had a number of different scripts that were being considered.
the chosen script was a new take on their tried version of people carrying orange numbers under their arms representing their expected pensions. Armor

The catch?
This time, it's for real.

They had to have depth, heft, and one of them had to have all that and open for real, to find, nested inside, the protected numbers.

The challenge? finding the right material.
the choice turned out to be CNC aerospace grade aluminum alloy. not an easy material, not a cheap one, and with the deadline so close, one that required unfailing dedication of the metal workers.
But beautiful it turned out. All computer numerically controlled perfection.

A wide ethnic talent pool turned the locked off streets of downtown Santiago into Anytown USA, a UPS style delivery truck was brightened up for number squashing duty.

FX in Chile included trained dogs, the hero number catching fire, and a subway just for us, with a door slamming into the armored number again and again.

End results turned out to be clearly superior to the usual CGI and made it all worthwhile.

Our friends in France have been coming to Chile! Bienvenu! (pardon my french!)

At the end of December, a request came in for French Alpine Mountains, with some snow, green grass, green trees, Fir trees actually or sapins, blue skies, and lumberjacks ( timbers ).

The south of Chile was the place, we fixed up a great location, cast for the timbers, and then got to work on the trees. The idea was to set up a croquet course made up of tree trunks carved with the hole, a specially made giant croquet ball, and axes to whack them around.

Staying at the unique Antumalal hotel was a big bonus, where the Queen once stayed.

It's summer time again.

What advantages does Chile offer for your production service?

1. Currency. The Chilean peso has steadily been losing ground to the US Dollar and especially to the euro.
Since most of our costs are in local currency, this greatly benefits you. In these tough times, stretching your budget can make all the difference.

2. Weather. The Western Side of the Andes has very dry weather all summer long. From October to April, Central Chile averages about 1 day of precipitation a month. Check your almanac, this is a fact.

3. Versatility. Within a short drive from the capital, Santiago, you can reach mountains, lagoons, the ocean, and the water is not murky, it's the Pacific, blue, clear, (and a wee bit nippy!)

4. Urban locations. Non specific european looks, cobbled streets, modern banking districts, Wallpaper style architecture, suburbia, it's here.

This year has been a very busy one for the Chilean Production service industry.
Even with an extremely strong local currency, which should have hurt the business a lot more, the number of companies that have come to shoot in Chile only grew.

Large scale productions from Canada, Europe and Eastern Europe have discovered the capacity of chilean crews, art departments and the natural locations that had been a secret.

But another discovery has not been verbalized. It's the honesty of the local industry. Some have actually gone as far as calling it naivety but the truth is, it's refreshing to go to a country where budgets are respected as much as they are here. Overages are not born of underbidding, and additionals tend to appear where they should, which is for specific requests not present at the time of shooting.

The weather factor is also a push for Chile, as our stable climate gave it's usual 98% clear days during the course of the summer (from end of November till April).

The industry has recognized that unity has helped more than anything, since companies do not compete so much on a local scale as on an international one.

It´s always interesting to hear about how close kit the production environment is in different places.
Chile has traditionally been every man for himself in this business but things are changing as a younger and fresher crowd slowly takes the baton from the pioneers.
Why is sharing information important?
An interesting theory comes from science, which states that nature created altruism and that it helps the group, even though there is an inmediate cost to the actor at first.

A large part of the south of Chile is covered by forests, overlooked by dozens of snow-capped volcanoes, and watered by myriad white water rivers.
Logistics out of the main cities are excellent, paved roads, great hotels, overnight trucking from Santiago make the south of Chile a great option when you need to recreate a Canadian Rocky Mountain scene, or just need greenery.
Wheat is an important crop, turning gold from January to March, depending on latitude.
Dairy farming also supplies hundreds of alpine European look locations.

The Fjords at the end of Continental Chile take a select few into the place where the sea meets the forest and no roads go.

Many North American companies have come in search of recreating suburbia. Over the years, economic development has spawned numerous gated communities in Santiago and some other cities in Chile (coast, south) with the requisite buried cables, brick US or Canadian styled homes, lush lawns, pool in the back, SUV in the front. Winding blacktop and manicured parks round off these locations.

For instance, this urban area in southern Chile is but an hour and ten minutes away from the breathtaking lake district.

Shooting car commercials often requires virgin locations, untouched by a thousand lenses and tires. The variety of locations such as deserts, Patagonia, high mountain roads, tundra, steppe, coastal highways can definitely be found in many places around the world, but not often with the ease of movement, production values, and basically bang for the buck obtainable in Chile.

Companies that have shot in Chile include Lamborghini, Volkswagen, Mercedes Benz, BMW, Mitsubishi, Audi, Chevrolet, among many others.
Locations as exotic as the Torres del Paine National Park in the extreme Patagonian end of the continent served as backdrop for Volkswagen Passat when they launched their new model (Kors Film, local production service company). They also shot the A6 for its product launching in a nation wide shoot defined by flyovers in the Atacama Desert, the driest in the world.
